Marine Corps Logistics Command, Command Leadership

Commander, Marine Depot Maintenance command
Col. Kirk M. Spangenberg

Colonel Spangenberg is a logistician in the United States Marine Corps and is currently serving as the Commanding Officer of Marine Depot Maintenance Command (MDMC) at Marine Corps Logistics Command (MARCORLOGCOM) headquartered in Albany, Georgia.  MDMC is the Marine Corps’ organic maintenance industrial base that provides the Fleet Marine Force with worldwide maintenance support for rebuild, repairs, engineering solutions, modifications, calibrations, manufacturing, and technical services to maximize the operational readiness, lethality, and sustainability of ground combat and combat support weapon systems and equipment.

Prior to this assignment, Colonel Spangenberg served for two years as the Director of the Weapon Systems Management Center at MARCORLOGCOM, preceded by three years at Headquarters Marine Corps (HQMC). Colonel Spangenberg’s HQMC tour included two years in the Program Analysis and Evaluation Division for the Deputy Commandant for Programs and Resources, and a year as the lead for Conditions-Based Maintenance Plus and Data Analytics and Visualization for the Deputy Commandant for Installations and Logistics.

Prior to his arrival at HQMC, Colonel Spangenberg served a one-year academic assignment as a Secretary of Defense Executive Fellow with Morgan Stanley in New York City. This top level school fellowship serves as a long-term investment in military officers and is a key part of the DoD personnel strategy for grooming senior leaders and achieving its transformational goals. The fellowship followed his tour as commanding officer of the Logistics Operations School in Camp Johnson, NC. In that role, Colonel Spangenberg led a staff of 150 Marines and civilians, with a student population ranging from 500-1,100 Marines conducting entry level and career progression training in various logistics fields. During this two-year tour (2014-2016), Colonel Spangenberg led his staff to usher in a radical transformation in instruction by instituting adult learning methodologies into the educational environment. Colonel Spangenberg served a joint assignment at United States Transportation Command from 2009-2012, where he participated in major projects, such as the development of the Northern Distribution Network supporting operations in Afghanistan, and advised leadership on the military’s global distribution network and supply chain.  Additionally, Colonel Spangenberg has actively participated in the Marine Corps’ efforts to enhance innovation throughout the force and increase the ability of senior leadership to tap directly into the capabilities, ideas, and proposals of disruptive thinkers and innovators.

A native of Charleston, South Carolina, Colonel Spangenberg was commissioned as an officer via the Naval Reserve Officer Training Corps from the University of Illinois in May 1997. His 25-year career has encompassed a variety of leadership and staff positions. Early in his career, he conducted two Marine Expeditionary Unit deployments throughout the Western Pacific, which included humanitarian assistance operations in East Timor and responding to the USS COLE bombing in Aden, Yemen in October 2000. He deployed twice to Iraq with 3rd Battalion 6th Marines and once to Afghanistan with Combat Logistics Regiment 2. He is the recipient of the Bronze Star Medal for his actions in support of combat operations in Western Al Anbar Province.

Colonel Spangenberg holds a Master of Business Administration from Webster University, a Master of Science in Military Studies from Marine Corps University, a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of Illinois, and a Certificate of Supply Chain Management from Penn State University. He is also a graduate of the Joint & Combined Warfare School in Norfolk, VA, and is a joint qualified officer.
