Marine Corps Logistics Base - Albany, Ga. -- Marine Depot Maintenance Command (MDMC), Marine Corps Logistics Command, marked a new chapter in leadership during a Change of Command ceremony held July 31 aboard Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Ga. on July 31. Col. Kirk M. Spangenberg officially relinquished command to Col. Nicholas J. Lozar in a time-honored tradition observed by Marines, civilian personnel, and guests.
Maj. Gen. Keith D. Reventlow, commanding general, Marine Corps Logistics Command, presided over the ceremony. Distinguished attendees included Lt. Gen. Stephen D. Sklenka, deputy commandant for Installations and Logistics; Mark Romano, counsel to the Commandant; and several local community leaders.
After the traditional posting of the colors, invocation, and a heartfelt performance of the national anthem by Col. Spangenberg’s daughters, Maj. Gen. Reventlow acknowledged the accomplishments of Col. Spangenberg’s three-year tenure as the MDMC commander, highlighting the depot's transformation under his leadership.
“You’ve (Spangenberg) left this program better than you found it,” said Reventlow, “You led with purpose and professionalism, modernizing Marine Depot Maintenance Command and bringing depot maintenance into the 21st century. Your innovations, from digital manufacturing to advanced technologies, directly impacted readiness across the entire Marine Corps. That doesn’t happen by accident. It happens because of leadership like yours.”
Reflecting on his time in command, Col. Spangenberg spoke with pride about the team and the challenges they overcame together.
“We rolled up our sleeves, modernized our tools, optimized our processes, and invested in the people who drive this mission forward,” Spangenberg said. “Today, MDMC is delivering weapon systems timely, below cost, and at the highest quality results that reflect just how far this team has come in the past three years.”
He also praised the workforce that made those achievements possible.
“This organization is exceptional not because of me, but because of the people who show up every day committed to excellence,” he said. “The pride, professionalism, and resilience of this workforce are what truly define MDMC, and it has been the honor of my life to lead them.”
Col. Lozar, who most recently served with 1st Marine Logistics Group, I Marine Expeditionary Force, as the Assistant Chief of Staff, G-3, was welcomed as the new commander and expressed enthusiasm about the road ahead.
“The quality and speed of the work done here is felt across the Fleet Marine Force,” said Lozar. “Your efforts, our collective efforts — ensure our Marines are ready when the nation calls. We’ve got a war of work ahead of us, but together, we’re going to keep our Marines mission-ready. And maybe we’ll even have a little fun while we’re doing it.”
Maj. Gen. Reventlow expressed confidence in Col. Lozar’s leadership and readiness to carry the command’s mission forward.
“Your (Lozar) career has prepared you for this challenge,” he said. “You’re joining a proud and historic team, and I have no doubt you’ll build on this momentum. Under your leadership, MDMC will continue to modernize, deliver readiness, and lead from the front.”
The ceremony concluded with expressions of gratitude to families and the workforce at both the Albany and Barstow production plants. The leadership transition underscored the stability of service and commitment to ensuring Marine Corps operational readiness around the globe.
