Marine Depot Maintenance Command (MDMC) is the recipient of the 2018 Marine Corps Ground Safety Award (Group III).

Maj. Gen. Joseph F. Shrader, commanding general, Marine Corps Logistics Command, presented the award on behalf of the commandant of the Marine Corps, to the Marines and Civilian-Marines of MDMC during a brief ceremony at Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, Georgia.

The Marine Corps Ground Safety Awards Program provides recognition to commands and individuals for significant contributions and accomplishments in the field of safety, mishap prevention, and force preservation. MDMC previously won the award in 2014.

General Shrader spoke to the Marines and civilian-Marines during the ceremony.

“I truly appreciate the hard work and dedication to a safe working environment that you have established,” said Shrader. “Safety just doesn’t happen by accident, it is a culture that must be embraced.”

Col. Eric S. Livingston, commander, MDMC, accepted the awards for MDMC during the ceremony.

After the presentation of the awards, Livingston gave credit to the Marines and civilian-Marines of MDMC for the accomplishment.

“These awards are because of you and your hard work,” Livingston said.  “Safety performance is an indicator of the professionalism of an organization, and all of our employees, across the board approach safety as professionals.”

In addition to the 2018 Ground Safety Award, MDMC’s Production Plant Albany received the Marine Corps Logistics Command Ground Safety Excellence Award for fiscal year 18.

Livingston also credits the use of innovative technologies, such as the “zero gravity” arm with reducing workplace injuries. “The zero gravity lift reduces ergonomic stressors and directly contributed to a 66 percent reduction in injuries,” he said.

MDMC’s superior performance in ground safety is noted on the award citation and includes a 71 percent decrease in their Days Away/Restricted or Transferred rate, and a 41 percent decrease in their Total Case Incident Rate from the previous fiscal year.

Livingston had high praise for MDMC’s efforts. “Our first line supervisors and managers have been the catalyst to our culture change,” he added.  “Having all of our employees involved in safety is a critical component to our success.”

MDMC is the Marine Corps’ ground combat equipment maintenance depot, with production plants in Albany, Georgia and Barstow, California.
